D. H. Lawrence’s biography in his short stories and its impact on his literary career are analysed. Biographers, such as N. Zhluktenko, E. Honcharenko, Ye. Chernokova, N. Hlinka, N. Kudryk, M. Paltsev, V. Tolmachov, J. Worthen, J. Meyers and A. Knopf see his works, e.g. The Odour of Chrysanthemums and Sons and Lovers, as important autobiographical sources, tracing his growth as an artist.
Academics and critics still debate autobiography as a literary genre. Originating in antiquity, it found expression in many writers’ works. J. Worthen saw Lawrence «returned to his own observations that troubled him the most»; his works show a constant rethinking of hidden, inner real life.
His short stories, e.g. all The Prussian Officer and Other Stories collection, reflect especially his childhood and adolescence. These early stories are often set in his hometown with plots from his family and friends’ lives.
His stories’ complex issues, conflicts and relationships of autobiographical protagonists are shown in indirect portrayal and characterisation; skillful portrayal of their nuanced psychological actions exemplifies early 20th century modernist writing.
