The research deals with cinematography and television as significant components of contemporary mass art. An attempt to analyse the origin and main stages of development of the above-mentioned art types is made. Cinema and TV are studied as cultural and social phenomena and their most outstanding representatives are pointed out. As these genres of modern art are not totally studied by the scientists, the popular articles dominate, so there is a wide range of aspects to analyse in this and many other following works.
The first part of the work offers an overview of main stages of the cinema art development, mentioning the most bright personalities involved in the process. Ukrainian cinema art started in 1893 with the invention of the “kinescope” by Ukrainian engineer Josyp Tymchenko. The pioneers of the Ukrainian cinema art in the early 1900s preferred film adaptations of popular Ukrainian performances, as well as made an attempt to produce the historical movie. A fundamental role in national cinema development was played by O. Dovzhenko and his films, which raised national cinematography to the international level and started the trend of the so-called “Ukrainian poetic cinema”. Ukrainan cinematography was marked by a number of names of creators, who achieved the world recognition. Among them: film directors Serhii Paradzhanov, Jurii Illenko, Leonid Osyka, actors Ivan Mykolaichuk, Jurii Shumskii, Kostantyn Stepankov, Bogdan Stupka and others.
In the1990s there was a period of some decline in Ukrainian cinema industry and some attempts to rebuild it in 2000–2010s. Since the «Revolution of dignity», since 2014 the period of Ukrainian-speaking culture Renaissance started. In 2018 the first Ukrainian movies entered the top 20 of the most profitable films of Ukrainian cinema rental. Nowadays, in the period of Ukraine`s struggle for its existence and independence a lot of significant films based on the realities of the current russian-Ukrainian war were created. It is this very period when the national identity is formed and the rebirth of Ukrainianness in art takes place.
The second part of the work is devoted to the analysis of the periods of the evolution of the television as mass art and mass culture element. By the time of independence Ukrainian television had already have more than 50 years of history, rich traditions and highly qualified personnel. After the declaration of Ukraine`s independence a period of rapid development of state and private TV began. New TV companies appeared and new laws were made to develop this aspect of culture.
