BASIC PRINCIPLES AND STRATEGIES FOR TRANSLATING TEXTUAL MATERIAL FOR FURTHER APPLICATION BY STUDENTS OF THE ACQUIRED SKILLS IN PRACTICE
Дніпровський національний університет імені Олеся Гончара
Abstract
Knowledge of the theory of translation creates the basis both for considering particular translation problems associated with certain types of translation and certain combinations of languages, and directly for the practice of translation. The article examines in detail the main issues and concepts of translation theory, the problems of translation pragmatics, its adequacy and translation norms, which belong to the least developed and most complex aspects of translation theory.
The purpose of this article is to emphasize the basic principles and strategies for translating textual material for further application of the acquired skills in practice. This goal is achieved through an exhaustive presentation of theoretical material using functional examples. As an illustrative material, the article uses examples of English-Ukrainian translations and the results of a comparative analysis of the systems and rules for the functioning of the English and Ukrainian languages. Most of the examples are taken from published translations, but they have been modified to make them more illustrative for the purposes of this study in many cases.
Exploring translation as a special kind of speech communication, the theory of translation is not limited to the analysis of its linguistic mechanism, because translation is not only the interaction of languages, but also the close interaction of cultures. Thus, the article deals with the semantic side of language units and speech works, the connection of language with thinking, reality, society and culture.
